Mainland China Overtakes Japan: Hong Kong Travel Data

Mainland China overtook Japan as Hong Kongers’ top travel destination in late 2023 — and never looked back. We tracked ~200,000 booking receipts from Hong Kong users (2019–2026): 45 of every 100 outbound trips now end in a mainland hotel, staycations have fallen below pre-pandemic levels, and staying home costs 24% more per night than crossing the border.
